The easiest way to write an organized essay is to follow the four or five paragraph format, just like in our recent persuasive essay project. Always include an introduction with thesis statement, body paragraphs, and conclusion. So, here is a mnemonic device (memory trick!) to help you for RESPONSE TO LITERATURE:

ICTOC: pronounced ick-tock! Use this as your acronym to organize your 4-5 paragraph essay. Here's what this stands for in a response to literature:

I: Introduction. Give a brief intro naming the title of the story, and put your thesis statement at the end. Your thesis statement should be a judgment you have made about the story's characters and theme.
C: Character analysis. Discuss the character(s) in the story--not what the author has TOLD you, but what you can INFER based on the characters words and actions. Focus on how the characters change, grow, or learn a valuable lesson by the end of the story.
T: Theme. Here, you need to figure out what the author's message is in the story. What life lessons can one learn from the story? Use quotes or examples to support your assessment of the theme. Remember most authors will not TELL you the theme; you will have to infer it!
O: Optional/Other. Are there other literary devices used in the story, like imagery, symbolism, or foreshadowing that help readers understand the characters and theme? If not, move on to conclusion; if so, write a paragraph explaining and giving examples.
C: Conclusion. Restate your thesis, and sum up your main statements from each paragraph. Make a connection to your own life or the outside world, or share your opinion on the story.

Black History Month Reading Titles

We wanted to let you know about a new Teen Ink Blog web initiative we are about to launch. At this time we are looking for students who are passionate about a particular subject and love to write on a regular basis.
If you, or someone you know, is interested in doing a weekly blog for TeenInk.com, please email john@teenink.com and let us know.
Here are the guidelines:
On our website there will be a link to our blogs. When one goes to that page, there will be a list of the various blogs by subject - such as books, movies, poetry, photography, college, fiction, etc. In short, all the sections of the magazine. There could also be nonfiction blogs on subjects such as dating, fashion, dealing with illness, politics, etc. In short, any subject that you feel passionate about.
We plan to have one primary writer for each blog (you can do more than one subject if you have the time). This will be a very special hand-picked group of teens who are good writers and love to write often. Others will be able to either "post" or "comment" on YOUR blog. However, if you are the main person running the blog for your section, you will be responsible for reviewing the posts and comments and deleting inappropriate entries. Also, we expect that you will do at least one good post or column per week.
We expect that the blog or column will be ABOUT your subject and not just samples of your own fiction or poetry. Of course you can include your work from time to time, but this should be a blog about your thoughts, concerns, ideas, creativity, etc. relating to your area of interest. If you do a blog about movies, music, books, etc., you can include reviews of current and past work.
We ask that you don't request to be the primary blogger unless you plan to do it for at least 4-6 months or longer. Also, you should only consider doing a blog for a subject you really care about and one that you would have no trouble writing about every week. This should definitely be fun and fulfilling, and not a chore or work.
We are really excited about this and look forward to hearing from you soon. I suggest if you are really interested, you email john@teenink.com with 4 - 6 sample blogs on your area of interest. Each blog should be about 300-600 words. When we receive your samples, we will review them and notify you if you have been officially selected as the primary blogger and assign a username and password. Once the site gets set up you will be able to post your own blogs without sending them to us for review.
For now, when you email your blog samples, please put your last name and the blog category in the subject field. For example, it should read: Meyer Blog - Fiction
If you have any suggestions or questions, I would be more than happy to speak with you about your blog and/or the specific topic, so feel free to call any time to discuss at 800-363-1986, weekdays from 9-5 EST. Of course, you can email any time.

Hello, Pretties in Pink. Here are a few reminders for your POL:

1. Please remember to dress professionally.
2. Please make sure have all materials ready to start your POL by your panel 's start time (see list below). NOTE: You will not have time for any last minute preparations once the panel has started.
3. All students are expected to remain in the classroom during their scheduled panel time. Students may bring water bottles and have them out. You will likely receive one or two short breaks for restroom and snacks, but no eating during POL's.
4. Make sure to bring the following to your POL:

Your parent/guardian(s)/other supportive adult(s)
Your POL portfolio in a folder or binder
Your rubric. It should be ready to be handed to the teacher with your name on it, so don't attach it in the portfolio.
The Questions Packet. You'll need this in front of you when serving as a panelist.
All your visual aids. They should be ready to go and brought in the room at the start of the panel. You will be given time to set them up and to log on a laptop if needed.
PLEASE NOTE: Being unprepared will result in loss of points on your POL. All of the above documents are available on the "Projects Page."

1. Read books!! Document your reading using the independent reading heading to show author, title, and number of pages. You can write responses as you read, or write a longer review of the book at the end. Another option is posting a review on a site and posting the link on your blog. When you respond or write reviews, be sure not to spoil surprises or endings for the next reader!
2. Work on your project research. Many of you have additional tasks to accomplish on your project research. Each group member is responsible for 5 reliable sources, completely cited in proper format. Each member is also responsible for knowing which information comes from which source.
3. Check out the awesome story Alex F. wrote, posted on his blog. Offer him some specific feedback about what you like so far.

AC's: You'll have about one hour to meet on Tuesday.

Please go step by step through the following task list. We are about to get into the really exciting part of our project you've all been waiting for! But you need to really get down to specifics and decide exactly how to display your content. Use this time to brainsorm and plan all the amazing sites you're about to create!

Meet with website project groups; get out folders and site maps.
Review project jobs and roles in each group. They will become very important in this next phase!!

If anyone has work done over break, share with the group what you've accomplished. Who still needs to do more work on their sources? Each member should submit their source list to the CIM. If not finished, IT IS DUE NOW!!! Get it done ASAP.

Review research notes. The content info manager and supervising editor should determine what research still needs to be done. CIM and SE can decide if they'd like to take over remaining research, source evaluation, copyright permissions, and citations as their job descriptions indicate. However, if people need to follow up on their previously assinged research topics, CIM and SE may assign tasks as needed. (In other words, people that needed to do more and/or better research to contribute their fair share can be assigned those tasks they should have accomplished in the first place!) Each member is responsible for contributing 5 credible sources.

Review Site Map and Topic Guides for your ideas about displaying site content. Now that you have all the info, decide more specifically how you plan to display content. This discussion might get long, so document ideas by revising original site maps or starting a new, more specific site map with all the details.
Discuss site layout and design. What kinds of images will you need to gather? Which can you create? Write down your ideas. What type of template do you want? Colors? Layout? Remember, try to create your own rather than downloading others!

Contacting experts: You must contact at least one expert in your field by NEXT Friday, January 19. Figure out who you could contact and find information needed to contact them, and what you will want to learn from them. How will you use the expert info on your site?
Finally, if you get this far...Create Individual Task Lists for the next week and a half based on all of the above, and what the group needs. Looking at job descriptions, divide your tasks up as evenly as possible. When I get back, I'll add all my tasks on to those lists:)!

Remember you will need to do DOUBLE the amount to receive the same credit you could have earned by doing it on time. (EX: 4 hours will be needed to equal the points you would have gotten for doing the 2 hours on time --10. The response and amount of pages should reflect MORE reading!)

1. “For the rest of your lives….never, ever, allow a group’s will to usurp your individual rights.” --p. 135. What does this quote mean? Explain your interpretation in 2-3 sentences. Then, explain how you might apply this quote in your own life, providing specific examples. (1-2 paragraphs)

2 Analyzing Robert: Analyze Robert as a character, considering his personality traits at the start of the novel and his transformation as he becomes a member of the Wave. How does he change during the book? Why do you think the Wave changed him in that way? Re-read the last page of the book, and then explain what you think his future holds. Will he go back to who he was at the start of the novel? Or do you think the Wave had some positive effects on Robert? What will become of him now that the Wave is over? (1-2 PARAGRAPHS)

3 Read the definition of fascism below.
Fascism: a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.

Mob Mentality: Write a paragraph titled: “Avoiding Mob Mentality: A Practical Guide by A Middle Student, for Other Middle School Students.” You are starting to see the power of mob mentality through many different examples in your classes and studies of history this year, and this book provides yet another shocking example of how easy it is to get caught up in a crowd. OP: STANDS FOR ORIGINAL POST. This will be your initial posting after each reading. Consider it your nightly reading response! Each OP is worth 10 points and will consist of the following:
1. Ms. I’s question(s): check Ms. I’s blog for question(s) on that reading section (3-5 sentence response)
2. Important Sentence: Each student will QUOTE (copy exactly) a sentence that jumped out at them as extremely interesting, unusual, and important, AND label with a page number. Explain why it stood out or why you feel it’s important in 2-5 sentences.
3. Student-created discussion question: Each student should raise a question/topic for the group to consider, using the guidelines for responding to literature in your binder. These questions should be related to reading strategies or literary terms. SEE OTHER POST FOR SPECIFICS.

Guidelines for Writing Discussion Questions

Here are some ideas for writing discussion questions (#3 in your nightly assignments. DO NOT WRITE "comprehension" questions, which ismply asks for facts, like a quiz. Example: what movie did the students watch in class? A good way to test your question is to make sure it CANNOT be answered in just a couple words. It should be something people could write 3-4 sentences about.

Choose a sentence that made you confused, or just made you really say HMMM! Ask the group to help you make sense of it by describing what made you wonder or be confused. This should NOT be the same as your "important passage;" it can be a way for you to see how other people saw that part so that you understand better.
"Why" questions about the motives of the characters, especially the things about them the author doesn't tell you! Work together to figure out the character's motivation behind their actions.
"Why did the author...." questions. These are questions about the author's craft, like how they create suspense, use dialogue, imagery, metaphors, or symbols.
Identify words, actions, or images you feel are symbolic or very important throughout the novel.
Themes: asking thoughtful questions about the lessons that can be learned in the book. What is the author trying to teach you in a particular part? These types will become more important as the author's message becomes clearer towards the END of the book.
Any others you can think of that will require 3-4 sentence responses and stimulate discussion in your group!

Hello, everyone! I hope you will be excited about sharing your ideas regarding your independent reading. I am hoping that this year, reading journals can transform into an online reading community of students sharing ideas. The options are endless: students can share book ideas, find common likes (and dislikes!) related to reading, help each other make meaning out of books, and ask thoughtful questions about the characters, settings, and situations they encounter, and make connections across different texts. We will be working together to get this off the ground in these first few weeks, and if you encounter difficulties or have suggestions please let me know. We hope to be setting up blogs and co comment accounts at the end of this week.
